Karunamaya Vesna Blazhevska on the Lesson Her Years in Communications Left Her With

New York City, New York Oct 23, 2026 (Issuewire.com) Karunamaya Vesna Blazhevska, based in New York, spent years of her career working as a Communications Assistant with the United Nations Sustainable Development. She speaks about that chapter only in her own personal capacity, not on behalf of any organization. The views below are hers alone.

Her work during that time sat at the intersection of policy and the public. Press releases, translations, and public inquiries all had to move through her hands before they reached people outside the building. None of it was glamorous. Most of it was patient, repetitive work: making sure a document said the same thing in six languages, making sure a government representative or a newsroom got an answer instead of silence.

That kind of work does not reward speed. It rewards care.

The Lesson That Stayed With Her

Blazhevska says the biggest lesson from that period was not about communications strategy. It was about humility in the face of complexity. Large institutions deal with issues that do not fit neatly into a single paragraph or a single translation. Her job was never to simplify the world. It was to make sure the world’s many audiences could actually reach the information meant for them.

“I learned that my job was not to have the final word,” she says. “It was to make sure the right word reached the right person, in a language they could understand.”

She says that lesson has outlasted the job itself. Years after the fact, it still shapes how she thinks about communication in general: less about being heard, more about making sure others are not shut out.

Patience as a Working Principle

Blazhevska is quick to point out that this kind of work does not look impressive from the outside. Coordinating translations, responding to media inquiries, keeping a public-facing office organized: none of it produces a dramatic headline. But she says the absence of drama was the point.

“A communications office that is working well is usually invisible,” she says. “You only notice it when something breaks down.”

She carries that same principle into how she thinks about public communication today, whether the subject is sustainability, education, or any issue that touches many different communities at once. Clear information delivered without friction does more good than a clever message that only reaches people who were already paying attention.

Carrying the Lesson Forward

Blazhevska says she does not look back at her time with the United Nations as a credential to list. She looks at it as a training ground for a habit of mind: slow down, check the translation, confirm the recipient actually got what they needed.

She says the same habit applies outside any one job. Anyone working across different audiences, whether in government, media, or a nonprofit, runs into the same problem she dealt with for years: information that is accurate but does not reach the people it was meant for. Her answer has not changed. Build the patience to check the details, and treat the reader’s understanding as the actual goal, not a byproduct.

“It is easy to confuse being understood with being clear,” she says. “They are not the same thing. Being clear means the other person did not have to work to understand you.”

That distinction, she says, is the one piece of her past work she would pass on to anyone doing communications today, inside an institution or outside one.
