The challenge of email-dependent operations
Communications within the marine logistics industry rely on shorthand-heavy email for updates. OpenTug’s customers would read daily carrier emails and enter updates into spreadsheets to track vessel ETAs. Manually processing these updates is time consuming and inefficient for an industry that depends on hitting schedules.
OpenTug’s BargeOS platform actively tracks more than 1,500 barges per month moving billions of dollars of cargo every year and processes updates across a database of more than 390,000 records.
Solving automation roadblocks with AI
Tech 42 worked with OpenTug to build an agentic pipeline to process emails, extract key data points, and make updates across their complete database. The result is an extraction time reduction from 20+ minutes to under 30 seconds for barge updates, regardless of volume.
Amazon Bedrock eliminates the token-per-minute bottlenecks that had capped how many shippers, operators, and facilities OpenTug could serve simultaneously. The system also auto-scales with demand, so costs track with actual usage.

By standardizing data from unstructured emails, the AI pipeline also unlocks insights into fleet performance that customers have never had before, allowing them to identify efficiency opportunities through better barge assignment, rightsizing their fleet, or optimizing dock scheduling with intelligent ETAs.
The net impact is OpenTug’s customers managing their barge supply chain in half the time, with some customers saving up to tens of millions as a result.
